The Haley Farm started in 2015 when we bought an existing Christmas tree farm whose former owners were ready for retirement. Dan and Nancy Hobbs built their house in the late 80’s and I think they started planting trees shortly after that. It was in the early 2000’s that the farm really started going. Before they left, they shared as many tips and tricks to the Christmas tree business that they and we could think of. When they moved, they left lots of supplies so we could have a turn key operation. One of the things that I’ve enjoyed the most is a farming journal that they used to record weather, plantings, farm animals and the like. It’s been interesting to see all of the things they’ve tried their hand at. And, it’s inspired me to start writing about some of the interesting and haired experiences that we’re now having at the Haley Farm.
So, who bought the farm? I’m Kerry Haley, now in my early 40’s and living just down the street from my old high school. I work at my local hospital and have the pleasure to run our hospital foundation, the Foundation of CVPH where I’ve been for the past 10+ years. My husband, Bill, was a year ahead of me in high school but I actually met him working at Little Caesars pizza back in the day, as they say… that’s a whole other story. Bill is a terrific auto technician and in recent years has learned to be a heavy equipment operator while working for my family’s business, Rafferty Sand & Gravel. We have two boys, Luke and Jake that are finishing their last year’s in elementary and middle school in the midst of a pandemic. I imagine them being these awesome little helpers on the farm but in truth, they work when we bribe them with money, eh, whatever it takes!
So, my plan is to start documenting some of the crazy things that have happened on the Haley Farm and show gratitude where I can to the people and things that get us through life.
Before we go any further, I want to thank you for taking the time to read these blogs and taking an interest in what we’re doing. You’ll quickly learn that we are not an expert in anything but I hope you’ll have a few good laughs at our expense.
